I have been trying to find the methods that do and do not work to gain Instagram Followers and have discovered the things that I believe to work, but I am still learning. I am not Instagram famous, but I consider myself to have a very good like to follower ratio. Speaking of like to follower ratio then let’s talk more about the importance of it.
Like to follower ratio:
If someone has 30,000 followers but they’re only receiving an average of 300 likes per post then the account has a very bad like to follower ratio, which could indicate they bought their followers. There is no set engagement ratio that is expected or that you should try to reach, but you can look at your follower number and your average amount of likes and determine if you feel your engagement ratio is good or not.
How to figure out your engagement ratio (like to follower ratio):
Divide the number of likes on your picture (or you can use the average amount of likes you get altogether) by the number of followers that you have to get the engagement ratio. For example, I have 6,829 followers at the moment and I average around 550 likes so 550 divided by 6,829 is 0.081 which is 8.1%. The more followers that you gain then most likely your percentage will go down because if you have 3 million followers then to have 8.1% you would have to average 243,000 likes on your posts, which not a lot of accounts with that number of follower’s average that many likes. Don’t get discouraged if your engagement ratio decreases as your follower count rises because it’s actually expected and completely normal.
Now let’s move on to the ways that you’ve probably already heard of.
Clean Looking Bio (or about me):
Make it short and sweet. It should include a little about you, in terms of if you’re a blogger, YouTuber, college student, or cat lover. It should also include a link (in the website portion of your profile) to your blog or social media account.
This is an example of what my Instagram looks like. I feel that it describes me and what I do perfectly while including my twitter account. Reminding your followers to turn on your post notifications is important. It’s important because many times people don’t think about it unless it’s mentioned then they will turn them on. I know I have at least a hand full of people who have mine turned on and it really helps with the engagement ratio.
Create a Theme:
Having a theme is aesthetically pleasing but… I’m not a fan of themes because I feel you should post what you want and not be so concerned about always having to find a white background or something close to white so that you can whiten it in an editing app. It’s just not my thing, but it will help you grow your Instagram. So if that’s your thing then go for it. I prefer to edit my pictures in a similar way which is also having a theme. My theme isn’t as hardcore as some Instagrammers but it has worked for me when growing my Instagram.
Make your account discoverable:
If your account is set to private and you’re trying to grow it, then choose whether you want your account private or you want to grow it. I hate to say it but you can’t have the best of both worlds. I mean… it’s possible but it’s only going to make it harder on yourself. Share your Instagram account and any new pictures that you post on your social media to expand your audience. Cross-Promoting has been one of the best things for my account. I share my Instagram account on Twitter and YouTube, which gives me a chance to reach out to 5,000 MORE people. I highly recommend cross-promoting.
Post as often as you can, not 10 times a day, but definitely once a week. I recommend once a day IF you can, but I know not everyone has a picture to post every day. I typically post at least once or twice a week, which has helped me to grow my Instagram. I’ve noticed that when I do post more often, then my followers are more engaged and I gain more followers. So definitely aim for at least one post per week.
Hashtags can be helpful when trying to get likes but aren’t as effective at gaining followers, in my opinion. It can make your post look a lot less professional if you have many hashtags in the caption of your picture. I recommend having the hashtags copied and ready to be pasted so when you post your picture you can be the first comment on your post to include the copied hashtags. Having a hand full of hashtags in your caption is okay but having 20 isn’t very appealing… once again, that’s my opinion.
While talking about hashtags then I HIGHLY recommend going through hashtags that are related to your account. Scroll through to find people that look interesting to you and go like 3 to 5 of their pictures. While going through the hashtags also leave comments that are related to what their caption and post is about. You will notice you will gain more followers through this method than just adding hashtags to your own posts.
Engage with People that are a Part of your Niche (or community):
If you’re a part of a community or niche, which you most likely are, examples are beauty, gaming and traveling. You should find a few people from the community who are popular and have an engaged following. Once you find those people then turn on their post notifications. When they upload a new picture then go check out the people who have already commented and liked their post. Those are the followers that you want because if they’re that into the person that posted the picture then they will probably be interested in your content as well, it also shows they are a very active follower which you want. You can either follow a few of the accounts that liked and/or commented on the person’s post or go like and/or comment on a few of their pictures.
Just be careful about being reported for spamming. The best way to avoid not being reported for spam is to also comment on the person’s picture. If you like 10 of their posts and do nothing else on their account, then it will make it seem as though you’re not actually interested in their content. So remember to take the time to leave a comment that’s related to their post.
